October Series 2002 Results

The Western Yacht Club's Rienvella Plate October Series 2002 suffered from both extremes of weather, in that the first two Sundays had very little wind, and the last two Sundays produced severe gale conditions. The first two Sundays results had to be taken as the final out come of the series. Racing on the Shannon Estuary can be a test of tidal navigational ability at the best of times, however when combined with slack winds and strong tides, can become extremely difficult. A few odd noises emanated from some of the Yachts as water depth decreased in an effort to avoid the full strength of the tide.
The results of the shortened series are as follows: Liam Madden's Green Ginger won Class 1 IRC, with Bryan Scanlons Confusion's 2nd and Adrian O Connell's Saryona 3rd . Class 1 Echo also went to Saryona. In Class 2 Echo Padraic Kelly's Frantic from Foynes Yacht Club won on both Days with Declan Hartnett's Bluebelle 2nd and Louis Keating's Fandangle 3rd
The overall prize the Rienvella Plate was presented to Liam Madden by the Knight of Glin at the November prize giving and Dinner Dance, the Plate had originally been won by one of his ancestors in the WYC Regatta in Galway in 1832. This being the first time it had been raced for since then.
The Western Yacht Club has decided to revive the Glin Castle - Carraigaholt
Bouy - Beeves Lt. House (8m. Bouy) - Glin Race. This was a great feature of
the regattas held by the Western Yacht Club in the 1830's. This will be a
long, interesting and challenging race, in that knowledge of tidal streams,
back eddies etc, as well as good efficient sail handling will be required
to produce a good result, as one sailing pundit stated that it will be more
akin to car rallying.
