GBSC Solstice Round Aran Race 2007 - Friday 22nd June
If you've never done the Round Aran, maybe this is your year to step up. If you're a veteran crew, you'll know all about the highs and lows of this event which will start from Galway Docks at 22.00, racing through the night clockwise round the placeAran Islands and finishing in Kilronan sometime on Saturday.
This year all race fees will be donated to Galway Hospice Foundation, who's vital home-care and day-care services are dependant directly on donations.
In light of this we are asking each competing boat to donate €100.00 in entry fees. (An average crew of 6 will contribute less than €20 per head.
- however I would encourage crews to seek further sponsorship for this excellent cause if possible
- badger your friends, family and workmates to divvy up!)
Colm Moriarty (Osange) is the sponsor of the Solstice trophy and will be "on side" as event co-ordinator. If you have any queries about the event in the coming weeks you can email Colm at colmmoriarty@eircom.net (Cos I'm going sailing - sorry Colm! Again!)
I understand there will be a subsequent race from Aran to Clifden (possibly the following weekend?) for boats heading to WIORA. Mark Bruzzi, RC Cruisers at GBSC has details - mark.bruzzi@nuigalway.ie
NOR and SI's will follow - see you at the start...

WYC Dinghy Options
Western Yacht Club
11th January, 2007.
Dear Parents,
Re: Dinghy Options
The time has come for the parents of kids in the Western Yacht Club, Kilrush to decide on what class/classes of dinghy the kids will sail.
I have put together a list of dinghies recommended by the ISA in their "High Performance Pathway", together with each class Associaton or manufacturer's blurb.
I would like you all to read this, as we will be having a meeting shortly to make a decision.
I know there is a lot in it but it is better if you have some idea of what we are deciding on.
It is better for everyone, the WYC, the parents, and the children, if we adopt classes for approximately:
a) the under 11/12's
b) the 12-16 year olds
c) the over 16's.
If you have any questions about these boats, look at their class Association website or givr me a ring.

Dinghy Sailing Sub-Committee.

WYC-October Series 2006- Report for Saturday 28th October.
Western Yacht Club, Kilrush, Saturday 28th October, 2006: Disaray and Hallmark clean up with six firsts each from six races.
With the wind gusting to 20 knots and more, some boats opted for a reefed main and a smaller genoa as they went to the start line at Cappa Pier for the last race in the Western Yacht Club October Series. Class 1 and 2 started together as usual followed shortly by Class 3 heading west through the choppy water on a long beat out through the mist to Letterpoint Buoy.
After Letterpoint Buoy, Class 1 had a run back up to the Committee Boat Buoy while Class 3 headed on a reach for Corlis East. There was plenty of close crossing and tight tacking situations as all the boats including whitesails then headed for the Corlis West mark. Once around it was a straight run back to the pier at Cappa. Dexterity finally found enough speed to take line honours ahead of Chaos and by a sufficient margin to win Class 1.
Disaray won Class 2 having led her fleet from the start.
In Class 3, a good clean start saw Virjin OTR and Hallmark sail tack for tack to the second mark where by then Virjin OTR pulled away a little and put a bit of space between them. The rest of the fleet were close behind but Battle had slipped back too far to push Virjin for second overall. Saronya, improving throughout the series, sailed a great race and would love to have had another race to try and catch up a few places for the overall.
The whitesails fleet was down to only two boats, Velella and Delamare both on 5.5 points. Delamare was pushing hard and looked like they were going to beat Velella on corrected time when disaster struck as a cap shroud parted. Quick work by skipper Martin Brew ensured that he didn't lose his mast but for Delamare the race was over. All Velella had to do was finish the course.
Commodore Randal Counihan presented the prizes for the day's racing and the Overall Series at the Prizegiving which was held after the WYC Annual Dinner in the Harbour Restaurant in Kilrush. It was an excellent way to end the very successful October Series with music and craic, the crews of most boats attending.
Western Yacht Club October Series Overall Prizes

Class 1 Echo: Chaos (T & K Whelan,Kilrush)

The Bobby Mulrooney Cup which is awarded to the yacht which has done most to promote the sport of sailing in the Estuary was given to Spirit of Kilrush. There was a standing ovation as Tom Whelan and some members of the crew were presented with the Cup.
The Rinvella Plate for the best performing boat under the IRC handicap system was awarded to Disaray.

WYC - October Series 2006 -Report for Sunday 22 October.
Western Yacht Club, Kilrush, Sunday 22nd October, 2006:
Twenty one yachts participated in Sunday's Races representing Foynes Yacht Club, Tralee Bay Sailing Club, Cliften Boat Club and Western Yacht Club.
The `Battle' rages on for Class 3 placing… With a shifting wind of variable strength, WYC Commodore Randal Counihan set a long triangular course from the start line at Cappa Pier. A few showers before the start did nothing to dampen spirits on the yachts competing in Race 5 of Western Yacht Club October Series.
Another glorious Sunday of yacht racing has come and gone with little incident to report with the exception of some good honest sailing…and a little helping of competitiveness thrown in!!! The race was around the cans which showed off our beautiful estuary and bar a few showers of rain the day was delightful…if you sailed on Hallmark, Disaray or Chaos that is, as yes you've guessed it, they all won their class again.
In Class 3, Battle put up a good fight though and took the race on from the start getting a little lead early ahead of Virjin & Hallmark with the rest of the fleet close behind. After the first mark the fleet spread out a little leaving the top three again out there with Saronya not too far behind…The beat from Carrig Buoy to the Committee Buoy saw a few place changes, but when the run home was started it was Battle clear ahead of Hallmark & Virjin on the ridiculous who were neck and neck to the finish line with only 10 seconds separating them. So Battle took line honours but not by enough and when the results were announced Hallmark scored another first with placeCityBattle in second and the guys on Saronya, who put in a great performance, slipped into third pushing the boys on Virjin into fourth place…
In Echo the ratings for each boat got a bit of a shake up and the usual suspects were dropped to take up the lower rankings and the top three places went to Bunbury, Saronya and Fandangle - they were all delighted to be on the top spots for a change and it is rumoured that the Fandangle crew are still out celebrating!!
In Class 1, Dexterity, Chaos and Zallaq led the fleet down the long beat to Corlis West from the start at Cappa Pier. By the end of the run back up river to Carrig Buoy, Zallaq had moved in front Dexterity with Chaos in third place. Dexterity made a rare tactical error which let Chaos close the gap. At the finish line, Zallaq and Dexterity crossed ahead of Chaos but not by enough to stop Chaos from winning on corrected time.
In Class 2, On the first beat K Vector 2 stayed with the Class 1 boats on the right while Disaray, Reconnaissance and Golden Kopper went left. It turned out that there was a better wind to the right and those boats stretched ahead. As the boats approached Corlis West the wind favoured those who had gone left and the gap closed, with Disaray overtaking K Vector 2 before the mark. K Vector 2 stayed close behind Disaray for the rest of the race but couldn't stop her taking her fifth bullet in the series. K Vector 2 is certain to come second in the series but only one point separates Golden Kopper and reconnaissance for third position.
In white sails, Delamare had a very good race to upset Velella from top position. Double Trouble and Whyte Dolphin had problems with the tide and finished outside the time limit. As we go into the final race of the series on Saturday both boats have 5.5 points so unusually for whitesails the pressure is on. Some close racing is guaranteed.
Got something to complain about? Don't whinge…. Join the Race Committee for 2007.
WYC Commodore, Randal Counihan presented the prizes at a function in The Galleon, Cappa later in the afternoon.

WYC October Series 2006 - Report for Sunday 15th October
Western Yacht Club, Kilrush, Sunday 15th October, 2006:The third Sunday in the October Series in Kilrush brought ideal sailing conditions with the wind ranging form 12 to 20 knots, some flat water and even a bit of sunshine thrown in…you would swear the race crews had ordered it!
This week saw five class 1, four class 2, seven class 3 and four whitesails boats heading out for the racing area west of Scattery Island where Commodore Randal Counihan had laid a windward / leeward course for the two races scheduled for classes 1, 2 and 3.
In the first race, Classes 1 and 2 started together as usual. On the first beat up to the windward mark it was evident that Zallaq was beginning to find her form, not enough to beat Chaos and Dexterity in this race but she managed an unusual result of first equal on corrected time with Chaos in Race 4, with Dexterity only 4 seconds behind.
In Class 2, Disaray again led the fleet from start to finish, but again the real battle here is for second place between K Vector 11 and Reconnaissance. Unfortunately, Reconnaissance had a problem getting their spinnaker down at the end of the last run letting K Vector 11 away.
The second race was a much shorter and tighter affair. K Vector 11 got an excellent start and kept in touch with Disaray on all legs until the last run where she opted for a rhumb line to the mark while Disaray went wide. This paid off for Disaray as she established enough of a lead to keep ahead of K Vector 11 to the finish.
In Class 2, Disaray won both races from K Vector 11. These two are edging out in front on the series score from Reconnaissance and Golden Kopper.
Class 3 had their own start for race three and all got away in good order again…a well behaved bunch of sailors. All yachts were looking for a change of places this week as the results sheets were starting to read similar each Sunday, so with the 2 laps of a windward leeward course to complete the yachts raced pretty much incident free but with only slight changes to the placing.
After a short break the race committee lined up all fleets 1, 2 & 3 and started them all together-and again all well behaved and got away cleanly with the class threes pushing hard and catching and finishing before some of the class 2 boats!! The race for class ran again with little changes and incidents to report as the standard is now being improved with the cobwebs well and truly gone and the teams now gelling well…the well oiled racing machine known as Hallmark was again victorious and class 3 fleet are awaiting next Sunday for another opportunity to try for Hallmark scalps again. Bunbury, Fandangle & Frantic are all changing places behind and Saronya made a good charge in race three…the sailing is great and we are really going to miss it when its gone in two weeks time!!
The misty conditions took their toll again in the whitesails fleet as Velella missed the Corlis East mark and sailed much further than necessary but the fresh conditions suited her and she made up time to finish 2nd behind Delamare.
WYC Commodore, Randal Counihan presented the prizes at a function in The Haven Arms later in the evening.

WYC-October Series 2006 -Report for Sunday 08 October
Western Yacht Club, Kilrush, Sunday 8th October, 2006: Windy second Sunday thrills all sailors….
The second Sunday in the WYC October Series proved to be a lot `windier' affair and some people even got their toes wet - and all the way up to their waists!! With the wind gusting above 20 knots all boats were tested to their limits…
There seemed to be a lot more than 6 boats in the fleet as everyone went to start at the committee boat end of the line in the fresh south easterly on Sunday. Marissa IX baled out and went back around but most of the rest of the class 1 and 2 fleets were over the line so Officer of the Day (OOD), Randal Counihan signalled a general recall.
On the first beat many boats underestimated the strong flood tide and overstood the mark. Disaray was around first closely followed by Chaos and Dexterity. A two mile spinnaker reach followed and there were many broaches as the wind topped 20 knots. After the gybe mark at Corlis West which saw Disaray make a rounding with no headsail, there was a close reach over to the Querrin mark, before the beat back out to the windward mark. Chaos, Dexterity and Disaray were out in front at this stage with Marissa IX mixing it with the other two class 2 boats Reconnaissance and K Vector 2. As the race progressed through another “triangle and a sausage”, Chaos and Dexterity pulled away from the fleet, with Chaos covering Dexterity closely. Dexterity took line honours but Chaos won on corrected time by just two seconds.
In Class 2, unfortunately Reconnaissance sailed through the line and was disqualified by the OOD. The finishing order there was Disaray, K Vector 2, and Golden Kopper. The real battle here is between K Vector 2 and Golden Kopper for 3rd place in the Dubarry Superleague with only 1 point separating them at the start of this series.
Unlike the start for class 1 & 2 boats, the start for Class 3 was a calm enough affair with all boats hitting the line on time and getting away cleanly. By the first mark the spread in the fleet could be seen.
Again this week the `fight' was between the top boats from last week just the order changing…it was Virjin on the Ridiculous, Hallmark and Battle followed close behind by the rest of the seven strong fleet. The first spinnaker run sorted out `the boys from the men' as the conditions were shifty and strong and a few broaches were seen like Fandangle unexpectedly `dipping' his crew to waist high water…the fleet maintained their positions for the most of the race with Fandangle making up a few places before the finish.
The top three were Hallmark, Virjin OTR & Battle with the gauntlet down for next week for the top spot -which Hallmark is not giving up!!! A very enjoyable, yet testing day for all in the class, as battle for the top spot heats up a little.
This week Velella decided that sailing in Class 2 was too hot for them and moved back to Whitesails, obviously a good decision as they had a comfortable win from Delamare. But Whyte Dolphin still leads Whitesails on points and Double Trouble may give them trouble next week.
WYC Commodore, Randal Counihan presented the prizes at a function in Charlie Martin's Pub later in the evening.

WYC-October Series 2006 -Report for Sunday 01 October
Western Yacht Club, Kilrush, Sunday 1st October, 2006:Western Yacht Club's October Series got off to a great start on Sunday.
Officer of the Day Randal Counihan's patience paid off as he postponed the start of the first race of the Western Yacht Club's October Series. After a wait of nearly 2 hours while the seventeen competing yachts drifted about in the brilliant sunshine, the breeze finally filled in from the North West and a windward leeward course was laid.
There were three starts with classes one and two away together, then class 3 and finally, Whitesails.
Disaray helmed by Brian O'Sullivan had a risky and cheeky start heading across the other three boats in class two and the five boats in class one on port from the committee boat end of the line. The remainder of the fleet opted for the other end with ensuing congestion at the pin end buoy. Marissa IX was over the line and had to go back and start again losing valuable time.
At the windward mark the first time around, Chaos had established a lead from Dexterity which they held for the entire race. Shortly behind came Confusion, Zallaq, Disaray, Reconnaissance and Marissa IX. First time down at the leeward mark Chaos rounded ahead of Dexterity and Confusion with Marissa IX, Disaray and Zallaq going round in a bunch. For the rest of the race the positions of Confusion, Zallaq and Marissa IX changed a number of times, with Marissa IX finally edging ahead of Confusion at the line with Zallaq in fifth place.
In Class 2, Disarray never relinquished her lead. There was a big battle between local skipper John Conway on his GK34 Golden Kopper and Tralee based Peadar O'Loughlin on his Sigma 33 Reconnaissance. Local knowledge didn't pay however with Reconnaissance taking a very good second and Golden Kopper third. Disaray's finishing margin was not enough for them to win on echo handicap. This went to Reconnaissance with Disaray second and Golden Kopper third.

With the October Series now being included in the WIORA Dubarry Superleague all classes got a little boost in numbers this time around. Especially, the class three guys, with 7 yachts heading for the line (and 3 more in the Marina due out next time)
As they left the start line it was Hallmark (Clifden-Jackie Ward) followed very closely by Virjin (Kilrush) and Battle (Foynes) with the others all close behind…the favoured side of the course was the starboard side so all boats picked their moment and tacked across…all still very close at the first windward mark with the top three in close contention. The wing mark was then followed by three spinnakers going up and all showed a bit of rustiness but they all flew down to the leeward with Frantic making a comeback from behind. No problems at the leeward and the boats a little bit more spread out now with about a minute between each of the top three and then a further 2 minutes back the to the rest of the fleet. All still to play for as the handicaps range from 902 to 840, giving a time difference of about 4 minutes in the hour!! The beat back up the to the windward saw the boats hold the same positions with Hallmark flying into first and Battle and Virjin holding second & third positions behind. The spinnakers all went up with no problems second time around with the `rust' well gone and the boats closed up very little and that's the way they all finished-as they started…no incidents to report but some good sailing and very pleasant conditions and above all a lot of fun was had by all.
Next Sunday can not come fast enough for the class three boats as they all want another go at catching Hallmark…maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon!!!!
Results:
Hallmark
Battle
Virjin
Only one boat (Whyte Dolphin) competed in Whitesails, Double Trouble remaining in the Marina and Velella opting for Class 2.
WYC Commodore, Randal Counihan presented the prizes at a function in Crotty's Pub later in the evening.

Estuary Bell Yacht Race Report
Western Yacht Club, Kilrush, Saturday 30th September, 2006: On Saturday 30th September, The Western Yacht Club of Kilrush hosted the last two races of the five race Estuary Bell Series.
In Class 1, going the last two races, Dexterity had 3.5 points against Chaos with 4.75, so Chaos needed 2 wins to beat Dexterity.
In Class 2, Battle had a score of 4.5 against Golden Kopper with 8.75. With a fleet of only 4 boats Golden Kopper would need two wins and for Battle to come at least third in each race to win the series.
WYC Commodore and Officer of the Day, Randal Counihan set a windward / leeward course for the two races for Classes 1 and 2.
In Race 4 which was 3 rounds of the course, Dexterity had a one minute win on corrected time from Chaos and Marissa IX who were both short crewed and had some sail handling problems in the fresh south easterly.
In Class 2, Disaray took line honours but not by enough of a margin as she was beaten on corrected time by Battle from Foynes and Hallmark from Clifden.
For Race 5, the final race of the series, the wind dropped to below ten knots, conditions which favoured the lighter Marissa IX who had a comfortable win from Dexterity and Chaos. Class 2 was again won by Battle, with Hallmark in second and Golden Kopper in 3rd. Battle registering a very impressive series with 4 wins from the five races.
Meanwhile in the Whitesails, both Marengo and Saronya enjoyed two races `round the cans' with Saronya winning both.
Class 1: 1st Dexterity (Team Foynes), 2nd Chaos (T&K Whelan), 3rd Marissa IX (Rob Allen).
Class 2: 1st Battle (McCormack/Buckley), 2nd Golden Kopper (Conways), 3rd Commotion (Callanan/Hartnett)
Whitesails: 1st Marengo (Pat Finucane), 2nd Sea Otter (Ger Reidy), 3rd Saronya (Adrian O'Connell).

Western Yacht Club -Commodore's Cup.
Western Yacht Club, Kilrush, Saturday 23rd September, 2006: Saturday was a busy day at Kilrush Marina as seven Tralee Bay Sailing Club yachts which had raced from Fenit arrived as the Western Yacht Club boats were leaving the marina for their annual Commodore's Cup Race.
All seven participating yachts started together for this all-in race based on Echo handicaps. In the interests of fairness this race was run as a Whitesails only race, meaning that no boats were allowed to fly spinnakers.
Chaos was over the line at the start and had to go back and start again, however she didn't lose much time as she was up with Zallaq, Velella and Marissa IX at the first mark. The smaller yachts, Fandangle, Saronya and Delamare were not far behind.
The fresh south-easterly wind meant it was a fast reach down to the turning mark at Querrin. From there it was a short beat back up to placePlaceNameScattery PlaceTypeIsland made easier by the flooding tide. At the windward mark at Scattery, Zallaq had a close lead from Chaos with Marissa IX a few minutes behind. At this mark Velella was ahead of Fandangle and Saronya. Another reach took the boats out to the Corlis East mark. The first three boats rounded in the same order but much closer together as Marissa IX made up ground on the off wind leg. Further back Saronya had overtaken Fandangle. From there it was a beat back to the finish at Cappa with Zallaq again taking line honours. Fandangle closed the gap again with Saronya and finished only 20 seconds behind her.
On corrected time the finishing order was 1st Chaos (Kieran Whelan), 2nd Zallaq (Tom Kerin), 3rd Marissa IX (Raymond Clancy), but it was a close race as on corrected time less than five minutes separated the first six boats.
WYC Commodore, Randal Counihan presented the prizes at a function in Charlie Martin's Bar later in the evening. Photograph of Commodore Randal Counihan presenting Commodore's Cup to Fintan Keating of Chaos.
The second leg of the Estuary Bell Yacht Race will be run next Saturday afternoon. The Western Yacht Club October Series starts on Sunday. It is hoped that about twenty yachts from Kilrush, Foynes, Fenit, Clifden and possibly Galway will be competing in this prestigious event with races held each Sunday for the month of October.

The Haven Arms Cup
Held on Sunday 17th September, 2006.
Press Report:
The Haven Arms Cup
Western Yacht Club boats raced for the Haven Arms Cup sponsored by The Haven Arms Bar and Restaurant on Saturday 16 th September, 2006.
Five Class 2 yachts, Saronya, Velella, Fandangle, Delamare and Diva started first followed by two Class 1 yachts, Marissa IX and Zallaq, fifteen minutes later in a perfect 10 knot sailing breeze.
The ten mile course started from Cappa pier with a long fetch out past Barnahard Buoy to Corlis East. Unfortunately, visibility was hampered by mist and drizzle and Diva, Delamare and Velella missed the mark at Barnahard Buoy and ended up sailing a longer course than was necessary. After Corlis East there was a beat across the Estuary to Asdee Buoy. At this turning point Zallaq had a narrow on the water lead from Marissa IX with Saronya lying in third place and the rest of the fleet well spread out. These positions were maintained on the run back to Corlis East and the fetch back to the finish at Cappa Pier with Zallaq finishing less than a minute ahead of Marissa IX to take line honours.
After a challenging and enjoyable day's racing WYC Commodore,Randal Counihan presented the prizes at a function in the Haven Bar.
Based on ECHO Ratings, First Place to Marissa IX (Ger Finucane), Second Place to Zallaq (Tom Kerin) and Third Place to Saronya (Adrian O'Connell). See Race Results
