Ger O'Rourke of Limerick crowned 2007 Cork Dry Gin Sailor of the Year

Ger O'Rourke's clear-cut victory in the Fastnet Race was rewarded today (Wednesday 19th March) when against stiff professional competition he was presented with the Cork Dry Gin Sailor of the Year award by Emma Donnellan, Brands Director Ireland, Irish Distillers Pernod Ricard and William Nixon of Afloat magazine and the Sailing Correspondent of The Irish Independent.

The presentation ceremony was hosted by the Morrison Hotel.

Cork Dry Gin Sailor of the Year for 2006, Ger O¹Rourke of Limerick had an even better year in 2007, and in August he crowned it with an overall and clear cut victory in the Fastnet Race with his superbly-campaigned Cookson 50 from Limerick.

O¹Rourke¹s epic win has been hailed as one of the most important offshore results ever achieved by an Irish sailor.

As a result O¹Rourke is the first to be awarded the Sailor of the Year award trophy twice.

Each monthly recipient was presented with a handmade ceramic piece designed by artist Michele Hannan. A special International Award was also presented to Carsten Hvid of Denmark who skippered the Viking Ship, The Sea Stallion, from Denmark to Dublin.
Along with O'Rourke many talented sailors were among the monthly winners and present at the ceremony to receive their awards for their individual achievements were:

Chieftain declared Fastnet winner
Thursday, 16 August 2007 13:11

The Irish yacht Chieftain, owned by Ger O'Rourke from Limerick, has been declared the official winner of the Rolex Fastnet Yacht Race after completion of the race in Plymouth last night.

The Bruce Farr-designed Cookson 50 carbon fibre yacht finished at 19:43:44 local time with an elapsed sailing time of 55:04:43.

The 608 mile event is one of toughest off-shore sailing races in the world and this victory is a major sporting success for Ireland.

Chieftain will be awarded the Fastnet Challenge Cup and a Rolex Yachtmaster timepiece at the prize-giving on Friday, 17 August at the historic Royal Citadel in Plymouth.

In the 1980s, a sponsored yacht called Irish Independent was not awarded the Fastnet trophy by the organisers of the race, the Royal Ocean Racing Club, when it claimed overall victory in the race.
At the time, there was a dispute over yachts being allowed commercial sponsorship

‘Chieftain’ Wins ‘Boat Of The Year’

Congratulations to Ger O'Rourke and 'Chieftain' crew.

Ger O’Rourke’s successful international campaign in his Cookson 50 ‘Chieftain’ saw the yacht awarded ‘Boat Of The Year’ at the Irish Cruiser Racing Association Conference in Galway on Saturday night.

Limerick based O’Rourke and his crew clocked up wins in seven major international events in 2006, including first in class in the gruelling Sydney to Hobart Race last January.

In accepting the award, the Western Yacht Club member paid tribute to his mainly amateur crew who have raced almost 5,000 offshore miles this year.

Introduction
The Western Yacht Club (WYC) is based at Kilrush Marina, Kilrush, Co. Clare on the Shannon Estuary, Ireland. Kilrush Marina provides 120 pontoon berths which has excellent facilities for all its visitors. Kilrush Maritime and Heritage Town is only a short 5 minute walk which provides many restaurants, bars and shops to entice any sailor to sample the fares on offer.  West Clare, One of Ireland's Best Kept Secrets, is an area of unspoilt beauty wedged between the Shannon Estuary and the thundering Atlantic. The sea is ingrained in our traditions and amenities in West Clare.

A Kilrush Crew has entered the BMW Round Ireland Yacht Race with a 64ft Volvo yacht, Spirit of Kilrush which takes place on July 1st 2006. As they undergo both physical and mental preparations for the race their vision and enthusiasm has now rippled its way through the town of Kilrush gaining public support from the local people and the Chamber of Commerce.
