The Irish yacht Chieftain, owned by Ger O'Rourke from Limerick, has been declared the official winner of the Rolex Fastnet Yacht Race after completion of the race in Plymouth last night.
The Bruce Farr-designed Cookson 50 carbon fibre yacht finished at 19:43:44 local time with an elapsed sailing time of 55:04:43.
The 608 mile event is one of toughest off-shore sailing races in the world and this victory is a major sporting success for Ireland.

Introduction
The Western Yacht Club (WYC) is based at Kilrush Marina, Kilrush, Co. Clare on the Shannon Estuary, Ireland. Kilrush Marina provides 120 pontoon berths which has excellent facilities for all its visitors. Kilrush Maritime and Heritage Town is only a short 5 minute walk which provides many restaurants, bars and shops to entice any sailor to sample the fares on offer. West Clare, One of Ireland's Best Kept Secrets, is an area of unspoilt beauty wedged between the Shannon Estuary and the thundering Atlantic. The sea is ingrained in our traditions and amenities in West Clare.
A Kilrush Crew has entered the BMW Round Ireland Yacht Race with a 64ft Volvo yacht, Spirit of Kilrush which takes place on July 1st 2006. As they undergo both physical and mental preparations for the race their vision and enthusiasm has now rippled its way through the town of Kilrush gaining public support from the local people and the Chamber of Commerce.
