RWYCI 2017 – Richard Glynn (Commodore)

Hi all,

With weather improving and days getting longer, everyone is preparing their boats for a busy season ahead.

In the next few days, the racing marks will be deployed in Scattery Roads and in the outer river in preparation for the McWilliams Sail Training Weekend Saturday and Sunday 6th/7th May. This sailing training event has proved very successful in the past, and allows competitors to brush up on key racing skills. A social evening will take place in the Marina Centre on Friday 5th May at 1930hrs which is open to all members, newcomers.

The junior section of the RWYCI expects a very busy season with the addition of four new Topaz dinghies which were purchased at the end of last season.  Also, a number larger dinghies have been donated to the junior section which will be available for use.  A very special word of gratitude to all those who donated boats and to those who work tirelessly during the season.

RWYCI and Foynes Yacht Club will be joining forces to celebrate the RiverFest weekend, while supporting Chris Egan’s fundraising campaign. Chris is departing Limerick Docks on Sunday 30th April on his round Ireland sail to raise funds for the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind and the RNLI. We will accompany Chris on his departure from Limerick Docks. Chris will be helped by James McCormack, Commodore of Foynes Yacht Club, who will provide his sailing boat for the fundraising trip.  Kilrush cruising boats will depart Kilrush Marina on Saturday 29th April at 12noon to arrive in Limerick Docks an hour before high water circa 1930hrs and then meet up with the Foynes sailors.

ISA Try Sailing was a huge success during 2016, and will continue this for six sessions beginning Wednesday 17th May at 1800hrs. If you would like to get a taste for sailing on the Shannon Estuary, please attend. Also, dinghy sailing for junior members will continue on Saturday mornings at the Creek Lodge.

Many of you have already paid RWYCI membership for 2017, but those of you that have not, please note that the deadline for discounted membership is fast approaching (30th April).

Please keep an eye on RWYCI website (www.westernyachtclub.com), and our Facebook page for further information

Looking forward to a great 2017 sailing season in the Shannon Estuary.

Kind Regards,

Richard Glynn
