ShannonFerry Group Western Yacht Club October Series
The ShannonFerry Group Western Yacht Club October Series commenced on Sunday in Kilrush. The 2007 yacht racing series will be held on Sundays 7th, 14th and 21st and Saturday 27th October, 2007. This is the final event of the Dubarry WIORA Superleague.

The Rinvella Plate will be awarded to the yacht, which in the opinion of the Race Committee, has given the best performance of all yachts in the series under the IRC system. Overall prizes will be presented at the WYC dinner on Saturday 27th October at the Harbour Restaurant.

Our sponsor, the ShannonFerry Group currently operates two purpose-built ferries on its service across the Shannon Estuary between Killimer, Co. Clare and Tarbert, Co. Kerry. Shannon Breeze (60 cars, 350 passengers) and Shannon Dolphin (52 cars, 350 passengers) can each carry a wide variety of vehicles including commercial vehicles, coaches, caravans, camper vans and motorcycles.
On Sunday 7th October, the overall performance was excellent in perfect sailing conditions, clear blue skies, 10 knots force 3 south easterly wind. A total of sixteen yachts participated from Clifden Boat Club, Tarbert Sailing Club, Foynes Yacht Club and Western Yacht Club. The Officer of the Day, Commodore Randal Counihan set a challenging course west of Scattery Island for the four classes which tested their sailing techniques to the limit. The weather conditions were favourable and two races were held.

Prizes were presented by Rob Allen, Racing Captain, WYC in the Haven Arms, Henry Street, Kilrush.  He thanked the ShannonFerry Group for sponsorship, The Haven Arms for finger food, Richard Maguire for manning the safety boat and Cathal Blunnie, Lisroe Marine Services Ltd for providing the Committee Boat. The Race Committee were Randal Counihan, Therese Young and Geraldine Hetherton. The results were computed by Rob Allen and Therese Young. Your correspondent this week was Geraldine Hetherton and article submitted by Charles W. Glynn, PRO, WYC.

Further WYC Background Information:

The Western Yacht Club (WYC) is based at Kilrush Marina, Kilrush, Co. Clare on the Shannon Estuary, Ireland. Kilrush Marina provides 120 pontoon berths which has excellent facilities for all its visitors. Kilrush Maritime and Heritage Town is only a short 5 minute walk which provides many restaurants, bars and shops to entice any sailor to sample the fares on offer.  West Clare, One of Ireland's Best Kept Secrets, is an area of unspoilt beauty wedged between the Shannon Estuary and the thundering Atlantic. The sea is ingrained in our traditions and amenities in West Clare.

The Western Yacht Club is almost 180 years old as on the 6th February 1828 at a meeting held in the town of Kilrush, the Royal Western Yacht Club of Ireland was established

On the 16th January 1832 their Lordships at the Admiralty gave permission for the Royal Western Yacht Club of Ireland members to fly the a White Ensign with a Red Cross, a Crown in the centre with a Wreath of Shamrocks surrounding it and with the Union Flag at the head of the Ensign, the Ensign to be flown at the Taffrail or as now the Pushpit Flag Staff aft and the Burgee being White with a Red Cross with the Crown and Shamrock Wreath as previous which was to be flown at the Masthead.

A Kilrush crew with the support from local people and the Chamber of Commerce entered the BMW Round Ireland Yacht Race 2006 with a 64ft Volvo yacht, Spirit of Kilrush on 1st July, 2006. In the Super 0 Class, Chieftain won first place and Spirit of Kilrush second place which created great enthusiasm throughout the town of Kilrush and the Mid-West.

Western Yacht Club member Ger O'Rourke's Cookson 50, Chieftain, was the overall winner of the Rolex Fastnet Race 2007 and was awarded the Fastnet Challenge Cup and a Rolex Yachtmaster timepiece at the prize giving on 17 August, 2007 at the historic Royal Citadel in Plymouth. The 608 mile event is one of toughest off-shore sailing races in the world and this victory is a major sporting success for Ireland and the WYC.

In September, Chieftain was named 2007 Yacht of the Year winning the Somerset Memorial Cup for outstanding racing achievement by a yacht owned or sailed by a RORC member.

50 million development at Kilrush Marina.

Shannon Development announced on 28th February 2007 that it has reached agreement in principle with a private sector consortium led by L & M Keating Ltd, for a 50 million development at Kilrush Marina, in the maritime town of Kilrush in Co. Clare. The new development has potential to create 109 jobs and generate an estimated 6.6 million to local economy annually

The proposed major flagship project involves a high quality mixed use development of the Kilrush Marina and associated land bank. It includes the provision of 86 town houses, 50 marina holiday apartments, a retail/commercial park, and a 125 bedroom 4 star hotel development. Another essential element of the project will involve an estimated 4 million expansion of the Kilrush Marina facility to include; a clubhouse development which will double the existing capacity, the automation of lock gates, breakwater, a new boatyard, a dinghy park, and an additional 120 berths which will double the existing berthing capacity at the Marina.
