Welcome to the Royal Western Yacht Club of Ireland Training Centre. Our courses are operated in the safe haven of Kilrush Marina. Our waters are non-tidal and a perfect place to start sailing.

Irish Sailing, who are the governing body for sailing in Ireland, run an inclusion project called Sailing for All throughout Ireland. This year they will be running the project at Kilrush Marina with the aim of taking children and youths with special needs out on the water during July and August.

The project is fully funded by Irish Sailing and Sport Ireland and is being run in partnership with Clare Sports Partnership and is open to any families with children with autism or who have mild or general learning disabilities who attend school in a special class setting.

The sailing is in a boat called a Hawk 20, an exceptionally stable boat, suitable for taking people with disabilities out on the water. Wetsuits are not necessary for this boat.

This is a unique opportunity for children and teenagers with special needs and their families to experience on the water activities in Kilrush in safe environment with experienced instructors. Places are limited.

Session times:
*** We are fully booked up to July 8th. ***

Week 1 - July 11th - Mon - Thurs - 10am and 12pm
Week 2 - July 18th -  Mon - Thurs - 10am and 12pm
Week 3 - Aug 8th - Mon - Thurs - 10am and 12pm
Week 4 - Aug 15th - Mon - Thurs - 10am and 12pm

We may run extra sessions during these weeks if there is demand. Please contact us for information.

While the main aim is to take children sailing, we also have sit-on two-person kayaks and a powerboat which are also available.

This is a brief outline but the program but it can be adapted to suit the needs of the children or youths involved:

·         Instructors are fully qualified sailing instructors and experienced with working with children with special needs.
·         Sessions can be once a week or more often if that is preferred.
·         Sessions would be run either as a morning or afternoon session.
·         Session length can be adjusted to suit each child. We are aware that for some children 30 minutes might be more than  enough but for others they may prefer an hour or even two.
·         A family member (e.g. sibling or a parent) or a friend is welcome to join the session.
·         Activities will be weather dependent and will follow strict safety protocols.

If you think any of the families of the young people in your school or community would be interested please don't hesitate to pass on this email with my contact details onto them and they can contact me directly.
